About the RMW BootConstructionA good boot is only as good as its sole. That’s why R.M.Williams offers four different types of sole – each to suit a look and a purpose. We pay as much – if not more – attention to our soles because no matter how finely constructed a boot is, if the sole doesn’t last neither will the boot.
Welt soles are ideal for dress boots and some workboots. Boasting 21defined features, the sole construction begins with a one-piece upper blocked to shape and closed with one seam at the back. This makes a boot comfortable, supple and easily moulded to the foot. Polyester bound elastic, double stitched with bonded nylon offers easy pull-on and maximum strength. Comfort comes through kid leather fronts and yearling back linings. Function is supplied by pull-on woven tugs – firmly stitched between upper, front and back linings. Your feet are allowed to breathe because R.M.Williams uses vegetable-tanned leather insoles. Thermo-plastic laminated toe stiffeners protect toes and retains shape. Heel shape is the subject addressed by our moulded heel stiffener inserted between heel linings and uppers. Soles are stitched with waxed thread for durability and strength. A forged steel shank with rubber tuck provides arch support and helps to retain sole shape. A stacked leather heel not only reduces swelling from water, it also gives added strength to the boot nails. A leather heel sock covers the nailing area for smooth comfort and a composition rubber top piece on the heels gives longer wear and shock absorption. R.M.Williams is one of only a handful of bootmakers worldwide that still use brass screws in sole construction. R.M.Williams’ screwed soles make work boots more comfortable and secure because the brass wears down with the leather, and are also used for some dress and riding boots. The term comes from the fact that soft brass, screw threaded wire is spun at high speed on a machine that “screws” the sole to the leather inner sole of the boot. RMW sizing is based on the UK or Australian sizes and width fittings. Most boots in the range come in a Regular (G) width fitting and some in a Wide (H) fitting. Other fittings are generally available as a custom made boot. Note: Additional charges apply to displayed prices for custom made boots. Regular fit G is a little larger than the US D fitting. Use the chart below to convert European and US/Canadian sizes. See our return policy regarding incorrectly chosen boots. |
